Kubrat led the Onogur–Bulgars and around 632 founded Old Great Bulgaria, a confederation on the Pontic steppe. His name likely came from Turkic words meaning "to gather" or "wolf" — fitting for a leader who united scattered groups under one banner. The confederation didn't outlast him; after Kubrat died, his sons divided the realm, and the tribes scattered across Eastern Europe and the Caucasus.
