## Bio

Born on the Sunshine Coast in 1957, Rudd graduated with honours in Chinese studies from the Australian National University in 1981 and became fluent in Mandarin, working as a diplomat and public servant before entering parliament in 1998. He toppled Kim Beazley in a leadership spill in December 2006 and swept Labor to power in 2007, ratifying the Kyoto Protocol, apologising to Indigenous Australians for the Stolen Generations, and steering the country through the 2008 financial crisis with stimulus packages that made Australia one of the few developed nations to sidestep recession. By 2010 his caucus support had collapsed over stalled climate legislation, and his deputy Julia Gillard challenged and replaced him in June - Rudd stayed on as Foreign Minister until resigning in February 2012 to mount an unsuccessful challenge, then defeated Gillard in a final ballot in June 2013 to reclaim the top job. Labor lost the September 2013 election after his two-month second stint, and Rudd left parliament, completed a DPhil at Oxford in 2022, and served as Australia's ambassador to the United States from 2023 to 2026.
