# Kash Patel

> A former public defender turned Trump loyalist who authored a memo attacking the FBI's Russia probe, Patel now runs the bureau itself - the first South Asian American to hold the post and a figure whose calls to reform what he sees as a weaponized agency have made him one of the most polarizing law enforcement chiefs in recent memory.

## Bio

Kashyap Patel was born February 25, 1980, studied criminal justice and history at Richmond, then law at Pace, and spent years as a public defender in Miami before joining the Justice Department in 2012. In 2017 he left to work for Devin Nunes on the House Intelligence Committee, where he wrote the Nunes memo alleging FBI overreach in the Trump-Russia investigation. He cycled through posts in Trump's National Security Council and ended the first term as chief of staff to acting defense secretary Christopher C. Miller in late 2020. After Trump left office in 2021, Patel built business ventures around the association, joined the board of Trump Media & Technology Group, represented Trump before the National Archives, and promoted conspiracy theories about the deep state and January 6. When Christopher Wray resigned in December 2024, Patel was confirmed by the Senate in February 2025 and became FBI director - briefly also acting head of the ATF - carrying into the job a promise of major reform and a record already shadowed by controversy over conduct and alleged misuse of federal resources.
