Priestley was an English chemist, theologian, and grammarian who published over 150 works across science, religion, and politics. He isolated oxygen through the thermal decomposition of mercuric oxide in 1774, invented carbonated water, and discovered several gases, but his scientific reputation eventually collapsed under his stubborn allegiance to phlogiston theory. He tried to fuse Enlightenment rationalism with Christian theism, advocating materialism and determinism in service of what he believed would be human progress toward the Christian millennium. His support for the American and French revolutions, combined with his Unitarian writings and calls for religious toleration, made him a target: in 1791 a mob torched his Birmingham home and church, driving him first to London and then to the United States. His pedagogical works — grammars, histories, early timelines — were widely read, but his metaphysical texts became primary sources for utilitarian philosophy, shaping thinkers like Bentham and Mill.
