# John Ternus

> He runs Apple now - the first CEO to rise through hardware engineering rather than operations or software. Since taking the reins in 2026, Ternus represents a quiet revolution: function wins when form and function collide, a deliberate break from the Jony Ive era.

## Bio

John Ternus joined Apple's product design team in 2001, spending two decades in the machinery before most people heard his name. He worked on the iPad and AirPods lines, then steered hardware engineering through the shift from Intel chips to Apple silicon in Macs. In 2021 he inherited Ive's senior vice president role and immediately rewired the design philosophy - form no longer trumps function, a pivot analysts called radical for a company that had worshipped sleekness above all. Five years later, in September 2026, he became CEO and joined the board. He is the first to reach the top job from the hardware engineering track, not operations or software, and the first born in the 1970s to lead the company.
