## Bio

Born in Moravia in 1592, Comenius served as the last bishop of the Unity of the Brethren before war and religious persecution drove him into exile. He spent most of his life moving between Sweden, Poland, Transylvania, England, the Netherlands, and Hungary, leading schools and advising governments while refusing an invitation to head the new Harvard. His 1657 Didactica Magna laid out a vision for universal education built on native-language textbooks with pictures, lessons that moved from simple to complex, and practical instruction over rote memorization — extending the offer to impoverished children and women alike. He saw knowledge as flowing from nature, and nature from God, binding pedagogy to theology in a system that prized logical thinking and lifelong learning. He died in the Netherlands in 1670, a refugee who never returned home but left a blueprint for the schoolroom.
