## Bio

John A. McDougall was born May 17, 1947, and trained as a physician before turning his focus to nutrition. He published The McDougall Plan, a diet book that hit the New York Times bestseller list by promoting a low-fat vegan regimen centered on starches and vegetables. The plan eliminated all animal products, cooking oils, processed foods, alcohol, and caffeine - a sweep broad enough that critics labeled it a fad diet and flagged risks like flatulence, poor mineral absorption from high fiber, and the psychological toll of limited choices. He continued writing and advocating for the approach until his death on June 22, 2024.
