Johannes Kepler was born on 27 December 1571 in Germany and worked as a mathematics teacher at a seminary in Graz before becoming assistant to astronomer Tycho Brahe in Prague. After Brahe's death he rose to imperial mathematician for Emperor Rudolf II and his successors Matthias and Ferdinand II, later teaching in Linz and advising General Wallenstein. In an era when astronomy and astrology blurred together, he redrew the line: his books Astronomia nova, Harmonice Mundi, and Epitome Astronomiae Copernicanae recast astronomy as "celestial physics," part of a universal mathematical order he believed God had made intelligible through reason. He did foundational work in optics — earning the title father of modern optics for Astronomiae pars optica — and invented the Keplerian telescope, an improved refractor that became the basis for modern designs. He died on 15 November 1630, having also written Somnium, a novel that later earned him the nickname father of science fiction.
