Baptised in September 1653, Johann Pachelbel rose through the south German organ schools as composer, organist, and teacher, drawing on influences from Froberger, Frescobaldi, and the Nuremberg tradition. His chorale preludes and fugues placed him among the middle Baroque's most important voices, and works like the Chaconne in F minor and Hexachordum Apollinis showcased his skill with variation forms and rich instrumental textures. He had many pupils, enjoyed wide popularity in his lifetime, and was buried in March 1706—three centuries before a single three-voice canon would eclipse everything else he left behind.
