Joachim Peiper served as Heinrich Himmler's personal adjutant during the Holocaust, witnessing the genocide of Jews in Eastern Europe — facts he later denied. As a commander in the 1st SS Panzer Division Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler, he led Kampfgruppe Peiper through Kharkov and the Battle of the Bulge, where his unit became notorious for killing civilians and prisoners of war. A US military tribunal convicted him of command responsibility for the 1944 Malmedy massacre and sentenced him to death, later commuted to 35 years; he was released and found work at Porsche and Volkswagen, then moved to France as a translator. He remained active in ex-SS networks, including the political group HIAG. On 14 July 1976, his house was set on fire and he was killed after his identity and location as a war criminal became public. Despite his minor battlefield role, he became the subject of a cult following among those who romanticize the Waffen-SS, though historians describe him as a ruthless commander indifferent to his own troops' lives and tolerant of atrocity.
