## Bio

Born in poverty in Fiume to a single mother, Kádár joined Hungary's Communist youth wing and rose to First Secretary before the war, though his reorganized Peace Party found little support. After 1945 he climbed the Soviet-backed party ranks to Interior Minister, was imprisoned under Mátyás Rákosi in 1951, and released by reformist Imre Nagy three years later. On 25 October 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, he replaced Ernő Gerő as General Secretary and briefly joined Nagy's government — then broke with him over withdrawing from the Warsaw Pact. Soviet intervention followed; Kádár was installed to lead, ordered Nagy executed, and released most remaining political prisoners in a 1963 amnesty. For 32 years he practiced what he called "toiling for compromise," loosening the economy toward consumer goods and Western trade in what became known as Goulash Communism, diverging from hard-line peers like Ceaușescu and Honecker while straining ties with Brezhnev's Moscow. Declining health forced his retirement in May 1988; he died of pneumonia the following year, months before the system collapsed.
