Born 15 December 1802 in Hungary, János Bolyai was a mathematician who spent years wrestling with the parallel postulate, the axiom that had haunted geometers for centuries. By the 1820s he'd developed absolute geometry, a framework encompassing both Euclidean and hyperbolic models—proof that internally consistent alternatives to Euclid could exist.
