## Bio

Ma Yun failed the gaokao twice before earning an English degree from Hangzhou Normal University in 1988 and taking a lecturer post. He founded a translation agency in 1994, launched its website, then left academia to run an online yellow pages service acquired by China Telecommunications in 1996. After an uneasy stint there and a period building government websites, he co-founded Alibaba Group in 1999 as a B2B marketplace that grew into a multinational conglomerate. For years he was the face of Chinese entrepreneurship. That standing collapsed in 2020 when authorities halted Ant Group's anticipated IPO following his public remarks faulting regulators for prioritizing risk aversion over innovation.
