## Bio

Born in Ujiyamada in 1935, Takahata joined Toei Animation after university in 1959 and spent years as an assistant director before helming The Great Adventure of Horus, Prince of the Sun in 1968. He partnered with Hayao Miyazaki through the seventies, directing television series like Heidi, Girl of the Alps and Anne of Green Gables, then collaborated on Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Castle in the Sky before forming Studio Ghibli with Miyazaki in 1985. There he made Grave of the Fireflies in 1988, followed by Only Yesterday, Pom Poko, and My Neighbors the Yamadas. His final film, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, arrived in 2013 and earned an Oscar nomination. He died in April 2018.
