## Bio

Isabella was born around 1172, daughter of King Amalric and his second wife Maria Komnene. Her half-brother Baldwin IV suffered from leprosy and arranged her marriage to Humphrey IV of Toron to neutralize her stepfamily's opposition to her half-sister Sibylla's husband, Guy of Lusignan. When Sibylla seized the throne in 1186 after Baldwin V's death, Humphrey recognized her claim, sidelining Isabella. Four years later, with Sibylla dead and the Third Crusade raging, Isabella's mother and stepfather forced her to leave Humphrey and marry Conrad of Montferrat so she could claim the crown against Guy. Richard I and Philip II ruled that Guy could keep the kingship for life, then Isabella and Conrad would succeed him. Guy left in 1192 and Conrad was elected king, only to be assassinated days later. The nobles handed her to Henry II of Champagne next, then after his accidental death in 1197, to Aimery of Lusignan — Guy's own brother. She passed the government to all three, though they included her in their charters, and her co-reign with Aimery produced the Livre au Roi, codifying what a queen regnant could do. She died in 1205, months after Aimery, leaving the kingdom
