James Newell Osterberg Jr. was born April 21, 1947, and by the early 1970s he was fronting the Stooges, a proto-punk band playing raw primitive rock that sold almost nothing but earned a cult following through confrontational shows laced with self-mutilation and exposure. In 1973 David Bowie produced the Stooges' Raw Power, beginning a long friendship that led both men to West Berlin in 1977 to shake their drug habits — there Pop launched his solo career with Bowie's help on The Idiot and Lust for Life, writing most of the lyrics himself. Songs like "Lust for Life," "The Passenger," and "Search and Destroy" became anthems even as commercial success stayed out of reach; his only U.S. Top 40 hit came in 1990 with "Candy," a duet with Kate Pierson. Bowie reworked their co-write "China Girl" into a global smash in 1983, and kept performing Pop's material for the rest of his life. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010 and handed a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2020, Pop remains a template — his voice ranging from baritone croon to unhinged shriek, his catalog touching garage rock, post-punk, industrial, jazz, and grunge, his influence audible in
