## Bio

Ian Holm graduated from RADA and built his foundation with the Royal Shakespeare Company, earning a Tony in 1967 for Harold Pinter's The Homecoming. His film break came with The Bofors Gun in 1968, which won him a BAFTA, then another for playing athletics trainer Sam Mussabini in Chariots of Fire — the role that also brought an Oscar nomination. Through the '80s and '90s he threaded himself into Terry Gilliam's Brazil, Cronenberg's Naked Lunch, The Madness of King George, and curiously played Napoleon in three unrelated projects between 1974 and 2001. He won the Olivier for King Lear in 1998, the same year he was knighted. Peter Jackson's casting of him as Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings trilogy introduced him to a generation who'd never seen him onstage, and he returned for The Hobbit films a decade later — his last screen appearance in 2014, a year he turned 83.
