## Bio

Born Su Zhu in Jiaocheng, he joined the Chinese Communist Party in 1938 and fought as a guerrilla through the war years. In 1948 he became party secretary of Xiangtan in Hunan — a posting that included Shaoshan, Mao's birthplace — and rose through provincial administration until the Cultural Revolution pushed him to Hunan's top post and then the national stage: Ministry of Public Security in 1973, vice premier in 1975. When Zhou Enlai died in January 1976, Mao made Hua premier and first vice chairman, the designated heir. A month after Mao's death in October 1976, Hua arrested the Gang of Four with the help of Mao's security chief Wang Dongxing, then took the party chairmanship and command of the military — the only leader to hold all three pinnacles at once. He ended the Cultural Revolution's ideological convulsions but clung to the command economy and the Maoist line, and between December 1978 and June 1981 Deng Xiaoping and his circle forced him out of real power, leaving him with hollow titles and then nothing but a Central Committee seat until 2002. He faded into silence, a correct Maoist to the end.
