Born in Jiangsu in 1942, Hu Jintao studied engineering at Tsinghua, joined the Party in college, and worked his way up through provincial posts in Gansu, Guizhou, and Tibet—where his harsh crackdown on dissent caught the eye of the top brass. He became general secretary in 2002, president in 2003, the first leader born after the civil war generation. His tenure saw the SARS response, expanded healthcare, the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, Tibetan unrest, and the Ürümqi riots. He pushed "Harmonious Society" at home and soft power abroad, oversaw the Anti-Secession Law and a trade pact with Taiwan, and locked in China's rise across Africa and Latin America. Modest, technocratic, he governed by committee for ten years of relentless growth. In 2012 he handed power to Xi Jinping and vanished from the spotlight—the only living former paramount leader.
