## Bio

Born in Tokyo to a military family of samurai descent in 1884, Tojo graduated from the Imperial Japanese Army Academy in 1905 and rose through the ranks as a member of the Control Faction. As chief of staff of the Kwantung Army in 1937, he led operations during the invasion of China; by 1940 he was Minister of the Army, advocating alliance with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. Appointed Prime Minister by Emperor Hirohito in October 1941, he mobilized Japan for total war, enforcing strict censorship and suppressing dissent through the Kempeitai while pursuing the Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere. His cabinet oversaw the 7 December 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor, bringing Japan into World War II on the Axis side. After the defeat at Midway in June 1942, the tide turned against Japan. Forced to resign on 18 July 1944 following the fall of Saipan, he was arrested after Japan's surrender, convicted by the International Military Tribunal for the Far East, and hanged on 23 December 1948.
