## Bio

Hermann Göring was a World War I fighter ace who received the Pour le Mérite and commanded the squadron once led by the Red Baron. Wounded in Hitler's failed Beer Hall Putsch in 1923, he developed a morphine addiction during treatment that lasted decades. After Hitler became Chancellor in 1933, Göring created the Gestapo and rose to become the second most powerful man in the regime. Named Plenipotentiary of the Four Year Plan in 1936, he mobilized Germany's economy for war; by 1939 Hitler designated him as successor, and in 1940 he received the unique rank of Reichsmarschall. His influence crumbled after the Luftwaffe failed to stop Allied bombing or resupply Stalingrad, and he withdrew to amass stolen artwork from Jewish victims. On 22 April 1945, his telegram requesting permission to assume leadership was deemed treason by Hitler, who ordered his arrest. Convicted at Nuremberg of conspiracy, crimes against peace, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, he swallowed cyanide the night before his scheduled hanging.
