Henry spent his youth in exile after his father rebelled against two emperors, finding refuge with clergy who shaped his devotion early. He became Duke of Bavaria in 995, then seized the German throne in 1002 when his second cousin Otto III died suddenly without an heir, defeating rival claimants to be crowned king. Unlike Otto, who had dreamed of reviving Roman imperial glory, Henry turned his attention north—his seal read Renovatio regni Francorum, the renewal of the Frankish kingdom—spending years in grinding conflict with Bolesław I of Poland while tightening control over Bavaria and Bohemia. He made three expeditions into Italy to assert feudal dominance and was crowned Holy Roman Emperor by Pope Benedict VIII in 1014. His method was calculated: he expanded the use of bishops and abbots as administrators to check the power of lay nobles, founded new dioceses, poured donations into monasteries, and bound the Church so tightly to the throne that Pope Eugene III canonized him in 1146, the first and only German emperor ever granted sainthood.
