## Bio

Born in 1955 as the eldest son of the future Grand Duke Jean and Princess Joséphine-Charlotte of Belgium, Henri became heir apparent at nine when his father took the throne in 1964. After studies in Luxembourg, France, and military training at Sandhurst, he earned a degree in political science from Geneva in 1980. His father appointed him regent in 1998, and two years later Jean abdicated, making Henri Grand Duke. The role was largely ceremonial until 2008, when his refusal to grant royal assent to a euthanasia law sparked a constitutional crisis that ended with Luxembourg abolishing the requirement for his approval on legislation altogether. In October 2024 he named his son Guillaume as regent and abdicated the following year.
