## Bio

Born on Lesbos around the turn of the 16th century, Khizr started as a corsair working under his elder brother Oruç Reis. In 1516 they took Algiers from Spain; Oruç declared himself Sultan but died in 1518, and Khizr inherited both his brother's realm and his nickname—Barbarossa, "Redbeard." He also took the name Hayreddin. By 1529 he'd seized the Peñón of Algiers from the Spaniards. Four years later Suleiman the Magnificent made him Kapudan Pasha, grand admiral of the Ottoman Navy. Barbarossa led an embassy to France, captured Tunis in 1534, shattered the Holy League at Preveza in 1538, and ran joint operations with the French through the 1540s. He retired to Constantinople in 1545 and died there the next summer.
