Born in Jeonju in 1949, Han Duck-soo built a resume across economics and diplomacy: finance minister in 2005, prime minister under Roh Moo-hyun from 2007 to 2008, ambassador to Washington from 2009 to 2012. He returned as prime minister in 2022 under Yoon Suk Yeol, making him the fifth person to hold the office twice. When Yoon was impeached in December 2024, Han became acting president — only to be impeached himself thirteen days later for blocking special counsel bills and refusing to appoint court justices. The court reinstated him in March 2025 with a 7–1 vote. After Yoon's removal in April, Han resigned on 1 May to run for president as an independent. In August, special prosecutors indicted him over Yoon's martial law declaration. On 21 January 2026, he was convicted of aiding insurrection, perjury, and falsifying documents and sentenced to twenty-three years; appeal brought it down to fifteen.
