## Bio

Born in 1823, Gyula Andrássy rose to lead Hungary as prime minister from 1867 to 1871, then stepped into the larger arena as Austria-Hungary's foreign minister until 1879. A conservative by disposition, he aimed to push the empire's influence into Southeast Europe, courting British and German backing while carefully avoiding a break with Turkey. Russia loomed as his principal rival — its own appetite for Slavic and Orthodox territories put it on a collision course with his vision. He regarded Slavic nationalist movements with suspicion, seeing in them a solvent that could dissolve the multi-ethnic order he was tasked with holding together. He died in 1890.
