Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege was a German philosopher, logician, and mathematician who taught at the University of Jena from 1848 until his death in 1925. His Begriffsschrift developed modern logic, and his Foundations of Arithmetic became the seminal text of the logicist project — the attempt to ground mathematics in pure logic. In papers like "On Sense and Reference" and "The Thought", he argued for Platonism over psychologism, introduced the distinction between two types of meaning, and advanced descriptivism. Michael Dummett later identified Foundations as the moment philosophy took its linguistic turn. During Frege's lifetime, his work went largely unread; it was Giuseppe Peano, Bertrand Russell, and Ludwig Wittgenstein who carried it to later generations, where he came to be recognized as one of the most profound philosophers of mathematics ever.
