James Gordon Brown was born 20 February 1951 and studied history at the University of Edinburgh, earning a doctorate before working as a lecturer and television journalist. Elected MP for Dunfermline East in 1983, he climbed to Shadow Chancellor under John Smith in 1992, then took the real thing when Labour swept to power in 1997. As Chancellor of the Exchequer under Tony Blair until 2007, Brown remade Britain's economic architecture - handing interest rates to the Bank of England, resisting the euro with his five tests, presiding over record growth but also controversies like the abolition of advance corporation tax relief and the sale of gold reserves from 1999 to 2002.
