Born in Sarajevo on 22 March 1950, Bregović cycled through bands Kodeksi and Jutro before becoming the creative force behind Bijelo Dugme, one of SFR Yugoslavia's most popular and influential acts. When the band split, he pivoted to film scores and solo work that married traditional Balkan sounds with broader appeal. Three collaborations with Emir Kusturica — Time of the Gypsies, Arizona Dream, Underground — put him on the map; he won the Golden Arena for Best Film Music in 1990 for Silent Gunpowder and later scored the Oscar-nominated La Reine Margot and Cannes entry The Serpent's Kiss. Across five decades he's written for Iggy Pop, Cesária Évora, George Dalaras and others, playing venues from the Royal Albert Hall to l'Olympia — one of the few former Yugoslav musicians to cross that threshold.
