## Bio

Glycerius served as commander of the palace guard under Olybrius until the emperor died in November 472. After four months with no ruler, Gundobad—magister militum and the real power—proclaimed Glycerius emperor in March 473. His short reign saw him repel a Visigothic invasion through his local commanders, diverting the threat to Gaul, and buy off the Ostrogoths with 2,000 solidi. The Eastern emperor Leo I refused to recognize him and sent Julius Nepos west with an army. Gundobad abandoned Glycerius, leaving him no choice but to abdicate on 24 June 474. Nepos made him Bishop of Salona, a post he held until his death after 474, possibly in 480. A near-contemporary source accuses him of arranging Nepos's assassination, though the records are unclear.
