Glen Travis Campbell was born April 22, 1936, in Billstown, Arkansas, and spent years as a studio musician in Los Angeles before anyone knew his name, logging sessions with the instrumentalists later known as "The Wrecking Crew". He broke through as a solo artist in 1965 with "Universal Soldier", then rode a run of indelible singles — "Gentle on My Mind", "By the Time I Get to Phoenix", "Wichita Lineman", "Galveston", "Rhinestone Cowboy" — that put 80 songs on the charts and nine to number one. In 1967 he won four Grammys in one night, took CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1968, and hosted The Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour on CBS from 1969 to 1972. He played opposite John Wayne in True Grit in 1969, earning a Golden Globe nomination and singing the Oscar-nominated title song. He announced his Alzheimer's diagnosis in 2011, recorded a final song called "I'm Not Gonna Miss You" in 2013, and died from the disease August 8, 2017, at 81, leaving 64 albums and over 45 million records sold.
