## Bio

Napolitano joined the Italian Communist Party in 1945 after fighting in the resistance, planted himself on its reformist right wing, and entered Parliament in 1953. A close friend of Henry Kissinger, he became the first high-ranking Communist to visit the United States in 1978. He served as president of the Chamber of Deputies from 1992 to 1994 and interior minister under Prodi from 1996 to 1998. Elected president in 2006 — the first ex-Communist to hold the office — he watched governments of left and right come and go, then in 2011 called on Mario Monti to form a cabinet after Berlusconi resigned during the debt crisis. When the 2013 election produced deadlock, he reluctantly ran again at 87, won re-election, and broke the impasse by appointing Enrico Letta to lead a grand coalition; a year later he replaced Letta with Matteo Renzi. He resigned in January 2015 at 89, returned to the Senate, and died in 2023 — still the longest-lived president in the republic's history.
