## Bio

Giovanni Giorgio Moroder was born in Italy on 26 April 1940 and landed in Munich in the 1970s, where he founded Oasis Records and Musicland Studios, a room that would host everyone from Led Zeppelin to Queen. His run with Donna Summer redefined disco — "Love to Love You Baby", "I Feel Love", "Hot Stuff" — each one a synthesizer-driven argument that the dancefloor belonged to the future. From Here to Eternity (1977) and E=MC2 (1979) pushed further into pure electronic territory, seeding hi-NRG, Italo disco, synth-pop, house, and techno. He pivoted to film, scoring Midnight Express (1978) and winning an Oscar for it, then another for "Flashdance... What a Feeling" in 1983, then a third for "Take My Breath Away" from Top Gun in 1986 — the work he calls his proudest. Along the way he produced Sparks, composed the 1990 World Cup anthem, restored Metropolis, and racked up four Grammys, four Golden Globes, and more than 100 gold and platinum discs. In 2004 the Dance Music Hall of Fame made it official, though by then the whole genre was already built on his grid.
