He played for the Villanova Wildcats, and was the men's head coach for the Washington State Cougars (1972‍–‍1983), Iowa Hawkeyes (1983‍–‍1986), and USC Trojans (1986‍–‍1994). He is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
