## Bio

Born Mary Ann Evans on 22 November 1819 in provincial England, she worked as a journalist and translator before taking the pen name George Eliot and publishing Adam Bede in 1859. The novels that followed—The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner, Romola, Felix Holt, Middlemarch, Daniel Deronda—set the bar for realism and psychological depth, most of them rooted in the countryside she knew. From 1854 to 1878 she lived with George Henry Lewes, who stayed legally married to Agnes Jervis and supported her children by another man; Eliot called Lewes her husband anyway. Middlemarch, published in 1871–1872, would later be called the greatest novel in the English language. Eighteen months after Lewes died, she married John Cross, a younger friend, and died that same year on 22 December 1880.
