## Bio

Gelimer seized the Vandal throne in June 530 by deposing his cousin Hilderic, whose conversion to Chalcedonian Christianity had enraged the Arian nobility. Three years later Justinian I used the deposition as pretext for war and dispatched Belisarius with an expeditionary force. Gelimer, either unaware or dismissive of the threat, committed most of his army to Sardinia under his brother Tzazo, leaving the African coast undefended. Belisarius marched straight to Carthage, meeting resistance at Ad Decimum on 13 September 533; the Vandals held their ground until Gelimer's brother Ammatus was killed, at which point Gelimer fled. After Tzazo returned from Sardinia the reunited Vandal army fought again at Tricamarum in December, a closer contest that ended in complete rout. Gelimer retreated to a mountain in Numidia where he endured a winter siege, at one point asking his besiegers only for bread, a sponge, and a lyre. He surrendered in March 534, was paraded through Constantinople where he reportedly quoted Ecclesiastes — "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity" — and lived out his years on estates in Galatia.
