## Bio

Born in 20 BC to Augustus' only daughter Julia and Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, Gaius and his younger brother Lucius were taken in by their grandfather and groomed as joint-heirs to the throne. The Senate waived the standard offices — quaestorship, praetorship — and let him leap ahead on an accelerated track reserved for the Julio-Claudian dynasty. In 1 BC Augustus gave him command of the eastern provinces, where he met Parthia's King Phraates V on an island in the Euphrates and struck a peace treaty. He was made consul for 1 AD. Then the plan unraveled: Lucius died at Massilia in August of the next year, and eighteen months later Gaius succumbed to illness in Lycia on 21 February 4 AD. He had married his second cousin Livilla but left no children. Augustus turned to his stepson Tiberius.
