Friedrich Wilhelm August Fröbel was born on 21 April 1782 in Germany and studied under Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi, the Swiss educational reformer. He came to believe that early childhood required its own pedagogy, one that recognized children's distinct needs and capabilities rather than treating them as miniature grownups. In the 1830s he created the kindergarten — literally "children's garden" — a structured environment where play became the engine of learning. He designed the Froebel gifts, a system of educational toys meant to guide discovery through hands-on manipulation. The word "kindergarten" crossed into English almost immediately, and the model spread. Fröbel died on 21 June 1852, but the architecture he built — that the early years matter, that play is serious work — became the foundation for modern early education.
