## Bio

Born in Rouen in 1954 and raised in Neuilly-sur-Seine, Hollande started as an advisor to François Mitterrand, entered the National Assembly in 1988, and led the Socialist Party from 1997 to 2008 while serving as mayor of Tulle. He won the 2012 presidential primary against Martine Aubry, then defeated Nicolas Sarkozy with 51.6% of the vote to become president and, by default, Co-Prince of Andorra. His tenure brought same-sex marriage, labour reforms, and climate leadership — Paris hosted the 2015 UN Climate Conference and secured the 2024 Olympics — but also the January and November 2015 Paris attacks, the Nice attack, military operations in Mali and the Central African Republic widely seen as failures, and unemployment climbing to 10%. On 1 December 2016, with polls showing he'd lose in the first round, Hollande announced he wouldn't seek reelection — the most unpopular head of state under the Fifth Republic walking away before voters could.
