## Bio

Born December 11, 1882, to Italian immigrants in New York, La Guardia moved through Congress twice—1917 to 1919, then 1923 to 1933—before running for mayor in the depths of the Great Depression. He won in 1933 on a Roosevelt-and-New-Deal platform and held the job for twelve years. In office he unified the transit system, expanded housing and parks and airports, reorganized the police, and funneled federal money into the city while starving Tammany Hall of the patronage it had lived on. His Sunday radio program ran from 1941 to 1945, making him a voice beyond the five boroughs. He left office in 1946 and died the following September.
