## Bio

Szálasi served with distinction as an Austro-Hungarian officer in World War I, then became a staff officer in the restored Kingdom of Hungary under Regent Horthy in 1925. Initially apolitical, he turned to ultranationalist ideology in the early 1930s and founded the Hungarian National Socialist Party in 1937 after leaving the military. His virulent nationalism and antisemitism drew support but also led to imprisonment in 1938; while jailed, he was proclaimed leader of the Arrow Cross Party, which became one of Hungary's most powerful political forces. After Germany occupied Hungary in March 1944 and ousted Horthy that October, Szálasi was installed as head of state and government. His Government of National Unity reimposed martial law and restarted the Holocaust that Horthy had halted — his militias killed 10,000–15,000 Jews outright and sent 650,000 more to death camps. The regime controlled little beyond Budapest and lasted 163 days before Soviet and Romanian forces closed in. Szálasi fled to Austria, was captured by American troops in May 1945, and was returned to Hungary, where the People's Tribunal convicted him of war crimes and high treason. He was hanged
