He had previously been the Chief of Staff - First Deputy Commander of the Eastern Military District from 2020 to 2023. He has held the rank of colonel general since 17 February 2023. In August 2025, he was appointed as commander of the "North" group of forces in Ukraine, replacing Aleksandr Lapin. On 21 September 2025, he was also appointed as commander of the Leningrad Military District.
