Joseph Ernest Renan was born 27 February 1823 in France and trained as an Orientalist, building a reputation in Semitic languages, biblical scholarship, and the history of religion. His works on the origins of Christianity found popular readership, but he also advanced political theories asserting white superiority and proposed the Khazar theory — claiming Ashkenazi Jews descended from Turkic Khazars and calling Jews "an incomplete race." Between 1864 and 1874 he led an archaeological mission to Lebanon, Syria, and Palestine, tracing the ancient Phoenicians. He died 2 October 1892, leaving scholarship entangled with racial doctrine.
