## Bio

Emanuel Swedenborg was born Emanuel Swedberg on 29 January 1688 and built a prolific career as an inventor, scientist, engineer, astronomer, and anatomist. At 53, in 1741, he entered what he called a spiritual phase; on Easter Weekend 1744 he experienced dreams and visions that culminated in a revelation: Jesus Christ had appointed him to write The Heavenly Doctrine to reform Christianity. The Lord had opened his spiritual eyes, he said, so he could freely visit heaven and hell, converse with angels and demons, and witness the Last Judgment — which he declared had already occurred in 1757. Over the last 28 years of his life he wrote 18 published theological works, including Heaven and Hell in 1758, and termed himself a "Servant of the Lord Jesus Christ." He died on 29 March 1772, and his writings became the foundation of the New Church, a Restorationist denomination founded in 1787 that reveres his work as revelation.
