# Edward VII

> He waited longer than anyone: nearly 60 years as heir before becoming king at 59. His mother kept him from power, so he became the face of Edwardian leisure - the playboy prince who finally got the crown.

## Bio

Albert Edward, called Bertie, was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His mother's mistrust kept him on the sidelines for decades, and he filled the time with ceremony and travel - a popular 1860 tour of North America, an 1875 visit to India, a reputation for pleasure that Victoria despised. He married Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863; they had six children. When Victoria died in 1901, he inherited the throne at last. As Edward VII, he pushed for modernisation of the Home Fleet and Army after the Boer War, restored royal pageantry, and widened the circles royalty moved in. His diplomacy with France earned him the nickname "Peacemaker," though his nephew Kaiser Wilhelm II remained a problem. He died in 1910 during a constitutional fight over the House of Lords, succeeded by his son George V.
