## Bio

Edward Jenner was born in May 1749 in England, trained as a physician, and noticed that milkmaids who'd had cowpox seemed immune to smallpox. In 1798 he published his Inquiry into the Variolae vaccinae known as the Cow Pox, describing how cowpox protected against the disease then killing up to a fifth of people in crowded towns. The terms vaccine and vaccination came from his coinage, Variolae vaccinae — pustules of the cow. He was elected to the Royal Society, appointed physician to King George IV in 1821, and made mayor of Berkeley and a justice of the peace. He also studied zoology, among the first modern scholars to document the cuckoo's brood parasitism. Jenner died in January 1823, his work credited with saving more lives than that of any other single person.
