Edward Regan Murphy was born April 3, 1961, and by 1980 he was a regular on Saturday Night Live, holding the show together through four seasons before breaking into film. 48 Hrs. in 1982 made him a movie star; Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop sealed it. He spent the next two decades alternating between leading-man vehicles—Coming to America, The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle—and multi-role experiments paying homage to Peter Sellers, his idol. A Golden Globe for Dreamgirls in 2006 and an Oscar nomination followed, then a long stretch of misfires until Dolemite Is My Name in 2019 pulled him back. His films have grossed over $6.7 billion worldwide, and in 2020 he won an Emmy for hosting SNL again. He received the Mark Twain Prize in 2015, the Cecil B. DeMille Award in 2023, and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2026.
