## Bio

Eisenhower graduated from West Point in 1915 but spent World War I training tank crews stateside, denied his request for Europe. Between the wars he climbed through staff positions until 1941, when rapid promotion put him in command of Allied invasions across North Africa, Sicily, France, and Germany—Operation Overlord in June 1944 broke the war open. After serving as military governor of occupied Germany, Army Chief of Staff, and NATO's first supreme commander, he entered the 1952 presidential race to stop an isolationist rival and won two landslides against Adlai Stevenson. In office he threatened nuclear force to end the Korean War, backed coups in Iran and Guatemala, forced Britain and France out of Suez, and sent fifteen thousand troops into Lebanon. At home he expanded Social Security, broke McCarthy, enforced school integration in Little Rock with Army troops, and launched NASA after Sputnik rattled the country. He left in 1961 warning against the dangers of defense contractors and deficit spending—the military-industrial complex he'd watched take shape.
