# Dr. Dre

> He built the sonic architecture of West Coast hip-hop - the slow, synthesizer-heavy G-funk that turned gangsta rap into a commercial juggernaut - then proved just as good at finding voices as making beats, pulling Eminem, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar from obscurity.

## Bio

Andre Romell Young started in the World Class Wreckin' Cru before co-founding N.W.A in 1987, the group whose Straight Outta Compton made explicit street narratives inescapable. After N.W.A split in 1991, his solo debut The Chronic arrived on Death Row in 1992 and made him one of the year's top-selling artists; "Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang" hit number two, "Let Me Ride" won a Grammy. He left Death Row in 1996 to launch Aftermath Entertainment, released 2001 in 1999, then spent the 2000s in the studio for others - signing Eminem in 1998 and 50 Cent in 2002, shaping both into global acts. His third album Compton surfaced in 2015 after years of false starts around the mythical Detox. Accusations of violence against women - a 1991 no-contest plea for assaulting Dee Barnes, later claims from Michel'le and others - shadowed the run, leading to a public apology that same year.
