## Bio

Dong Zhuo rose as a general from Liang Province in the 140s, arriving at the imperial capital Luoyang in 189 amid turmoil following Emperor Ling's death and a brutal purge of the eunuch faction. He seized control, deposed the newly enthroned Emperor Shao, and replaced him with the boy's half-brother — the puppet Emperor Xian — making himself de facto ruler of China. His brief rule was marked by cruelty and tyranny severe enough that a coalition of regional officials and warlords mobilized against him the following year. Unable to hold them off, Dong Zhuo sacked Luoyang and retreated west to Chang'an, the old Western Han capital. On 22 May 192, his subordinate Lü Bu assassinated him in a plot arranged by Interior Minister Wang Yun.
